Crackle is actually two paints an undercoat and an overcoat. In action, the overcoat shrinks and cracks apart as it dries, thereby allowing the undercoat to show through. This cracking is based in part upon the fact that the undercoat is a glossy paint. Its slick glossy surface allows the (usually flat) overcoat to slide as it contracts, aiding in the cracking. Be sure to let the undercoat dry thoroughly before applying the top crackle coat. Here s an experiment. Grab a gloss paint and a flat paint, anything you have on hand. Find a scrap piece of plastic and do the crackle thing. Gloss coat first. Dry. Then apply the flat coat. See whether you get any crackle. Many gloss/flat paint applications will crackle or react in interesting ways (you can speed the crackling with a heat gun).
